Steel Magnolias (1989), set in a small-town beauty parlor owned by a
woman, is a hardcore comedy that can make you cry. The plot is well
wrought and the script is strong. The characters are real and it is
really easy for us to identify ourselves with the characters onscreen.
Even the roles of the minor characters were very well etched out. This
entertaining movie was directed by Herbert Ross.
It is a good movie to watch along with family and friends and surely
mother-daughter pairs will enjoy this movie thoroughly. It also explores
the lives of the ordinary women who come to the parlor. The bevy of
big-time stars, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah and Shirley
MacLaine, has made a powerful screen presence.
The story revolves mainly round a domineering mother and her mentally
strong but physically weak daughter. We get to have some very
interesting brief glimpses of these two alive and vibrant characters.
Humorous dialogue exchanges and funny scenes further enliven the movie.
In conclusion, it is a good movie to watch and relax on the special
occasion of Mother's Day and even otherwise.
